ABOUT THE ROLE

The Regional Design Director oversees and leads creative excellence within a specific geographic area. Currently, the regions consist of 150-300 staff across multiple offices, each with their own design leadership.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL DO

  1. Transforming design excellence

Accountable for design quality across the region, including regular interactions with senior design leaders, regional standards reviews, and recognition efforts such as publications and awards. Advocate for Living-Centered Design, collaborate with marketing to craft impactful narratives, and represent the firm externally at events. Lead design presentations emphasizing storytelling and client value.

Lead select client projects, integrating client goals with community, societal, and environmental needs, and communicate design solutions effectively.

  1. Transforming the design team

Foster a collaborative, innovative community of designers, oversee recruitment and retention of senior leaders, and ensure mentorship and growth of future leaders. Promote the firm's culture and Living-Centered Design ethos.

  1. Transforming the organization

Represent the firm's design aspirations regionally, participate in strategic growth planning, and collaborate with leadership to develop and execute regional business strategies. Measure success both regionally and collectively across all regions.

  1. Demonstrable design talent

Possess a strong design portfolio with recognition from awards and publications, demonstrating your leadership in design.

  1. Strong communication skills

Ability to articulate complex ideas convincingly, lead firm-wide discussions, and inspire regional teams.

  1. Leadership, management, and community-building

Manage diverse creative teams across offices, foster a strong regional culture, and demonstrate managerial skills such as hiring, resource allocation, and mentorship.

  1. Business fluency

Understand regional and firm-wide business metrics, contribute to growth strategies, and support a minimum of 10% annual regional growth.

  1. Innovative thinking

Demonstrate innovation in design solutions addressing societal and environmental challenges, challenging the status quo.

  1. Collaborative approach

Support a culture of collaboration, transparency, and trust, partnering with strategic thinkers and growing regional talent.

  1. Business centric

Possess a passion for business understanding, contribute to regional and firm success, and cultivate a design brand of excellence.

  • Design excellence: 60%
  • Design team: 30%
  • Organization: 10%

Performance metrics may evolve over time.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture (preferred from an accredited program)
  • At least 20 years of related design leadership experience
  • Minimum 3 years leading design teams
  • US Architectural Registration preferred
  • Additional credentials like LEED preferred
  • Strong portfolio with recognized awards/publications
  • Excellent storytelling and presentation skills
  • Ability to understand and execute business strategy
  • Professional maturity and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel
